Murphy the potato plant is no more. The withered husk was uprooted and laid in the compost today. Suitable solemnity was preserved.
Underneath the late lamented were the 5 Murphy children, Seamus, Patrick, Danny, Maureen, and little Eunice. They were rescued, washed and laid aside for the next stage of proceedings.
Then a garden pot on wheels was obtained – a square bed big enough to take the family and allow them room to grow. Unlike their parent, they will have the benefit of being able to go out in the sun for a few hours and then back into the shade when it gets too hot. And they need not share their water with the greedy passion fruit vine.
In a few months we’ll see what the family looks like.
