Priorities

I keep an eye out these days as I drive for lots of things – the police radar speed traps, the angry tradie in the tray-top, the unguided Leeming missile – and I also see some interesting sights. Sights that make me ponder…

The hand outside the driver’s side window at the lights with the cigarette between the fingers. It dangles there for a short period of time then moves into the car and after a pause a stream of smoke comes out the window and the hand is replaced in the former position. On a slow set of lights this pattern might be repeated 2 or 3 times.

The driver does not want to get tobacco smoke inside the car because it damages the health of other passengers and makes the upholstery smell bad. So they make sure that the concentrated chemistry of toxins and gasses that does this harm goes straight into their lungs…

The person in the line in front of me at the supermarket that has a tub of ice cream, two Mars bars, a packet of Tim Tam chocolate biscuits, and a  Diet Coke…

The bald-tyred and rusted Commodore sedan at the service station with the muffler wired onto the broken plastic bumper that also sports a  $ 179 custom-printed rear window sticker…

Saving up dole money for a neck tattoo…

Everyone texting on their mobile at a restaurant table…to somewhere else…

Elizabeth Quay…I do hope that Serco can get the sterilisation protocols right for Elizabeth Quay…
